About Palmengarten and Senckenberg Museum

The Palmengarten, the botanical garden of Frankfurt opened in 1871 with its great palm house, and nearby the Senckenberg Natural History Museum, known for its dinosaurs.

Citizens founded the Palmengarten in 1868 to buy the tropical plants of a duke's winter garden, and today it covers about 22 hectares, with glass houses for plants from many climates. About 800 metres away, the Senckenberg Museum, founded by citizens in 1817, shows dinosaur skeletons, among them a Diplodocus given by a New York museum in 1907.

Both need a ticket, and they are separate. The Palmengarten is open daily, with shorter hours in winter, and it may close in storms. The Senckenberg Museum is open daily, with longer hours on Wednesdays and at weekends.

Did you know? The Palmengarten in Frankfurt began in 1868, when citizens founded a company to buy the tropical plants of a duke's winter gardens at Biebrich.
