About Copenhagen City Hall (Koebenhavns Raadhus)
Copenhagen's grand National Romantic town hall on City Hall Square, with a 105-metre tower and, in a back room, Jens Olsen's famous astronomical World Clock built from 15,448 parts.
Copenhagen City Hall (Koebenhavns Raadhus) stands on City Hall Square (Raadhuspladsen) and houses the city council and the Lord Mayor's office. Designed by Martin Nyrop in the National Romantic style, it was built between 1892 and 1905 and inaugurated on 12 September 1905, the sixth city hall in the city's history. Its clock tower rises 105.6 metres, among the tallest towers in the low-rise city, and a gilded statue of Bishop Absalon, the traditional founder of Copenhagen, stands above the main balcony.
Inside, in its own climate-controlled room, is Jens Olsen's World Clock (Verdensur), an astronomical clock of 12 movements and 15,448 parts that shows eclipses, celestial positions, a perpetual calendar, and both mean and sidereal time. Set in motion on 15 December 1955 by King Frederik IX, it was completed a decade after its maker, clockmaker Jens Olsen, died in 1945. Its fastest gear turns every 10 seconds; its slowest takes about 25,753 years.
Did you know? Jens Olsen's World Clock is built from 15,448 parts. Its fastest gear turns once every ten seconds, while its slowest needs roughly 25,753 years to complete a single rotation, tracking Earth's slow axial wobble.
