About Christiansborg Palace

A granite palace on its own island that is also parliament, supreme court and prime minister's office at once, with medieval ruins in the cellar and Copenhagen's tallest tower above.

Christiansborg Palace (Christiansborg Slot) stands on the islet of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen. It houses the Danish Parliament (Folketinget), the Supreme Court, and the Ministry of State, and is often described as the only building in the world to hold a country's legislative, judicial and executive branches together. It also contains royal reception rooms used by the monarch, the Palace Chapel and the Royal Stables. The present palace is the third on the site, built between 1907 and 1928 in Neo-Baroque style with granite facades, after earlier palaces burned in 1794 and 1884.

The site dates back to Bishop Absalon's castle of 1167, and ruins of the medieval castles are exhibited beneath the palace. Its tower, about 106 metres high, is the tallest tower in Copenhagen and has a free public viewing platform, opened in 2014.

Did you know? Christiansborg is often said to be the only building in the world to house all three branches of a country's government: the parliament, the supreme court and the prime minister's office all sit here.
