About Kastellet
A perfectly preserved star-shaped citadel from the 1600s, still an active military base, whose grassy ramparts, moat, windmill and church now double as one of Copenhagen's calmest parks.
Kastellet is a star-shaped citadel on the northern edge of central Copenhagen, laid out as a pentagon with five bastions and often described as one of the best-preserved star fortresses in Northern Europe. Its fortification was begun under King Christian IV in 1626, extended under Frederik III, and completed in essentially its present form by 1664, with the post-1660 reconstruction directed by the Dutch engineer Henrik Rüse. The five bastions are named the King's, Queen's, Count's, Princess's and Prince's.
Within the ramparts stand the citadel church, Kastelskirken (1703-1704), a windmill (rebuilt in 1847), the Baroque Commander's House (1725), barrack rows and large storehouses once meant to supply a garrison of about 1,800 for four years. Kastellet remains an active military area under the Ministry of Defence, while its ramparts and moat also serve as a public park.
Did you know? Kastellet is still an active military area under the Ministry of Defence. Because parts remain in service, some interior buildings are closed, even though the grassy ramparts and moat serve as a public park.
