About Amalienborg

Four matching rococo palaces around an octagonal square form the Danish monarch's main Copenhagen home, guarded day and night, with the noon changing of the guard its daily spectacle.

Amalienborg is the official residence of the Danish monarch and royal family in central Copenhagen, the home today of King Frederik X and Queen Mary. It consists of four palaces with near-identical rococo facades arranged around the octagonal courtyard of Amalienborg Slotsplads, designed by architect Nicolai Eigtved and built between about 1750 and 1760 as the centrepiece of the new Frederiksstaden district. At the centre stands an equestrian statue of King Frederik V by the French sculptor Jacques Saly, begun in 1753 and unveiled in 1771.

The royal family moved here after Christiansborg Palace burned in 1794, first acquiring Moltke's Palace. The complex is guarded day and night by the Royal Life Guards (Den Kongelige Livgarde), and the changing of the guard takes place daily at noon. Two palaces open periodically to the public, one housing the Amalienborg Museum.

Did you know? The four palaces were built for noble families and only became royal by chance: after Christiansborg burned in 1794, the homeless royal family bought and moved into one of them, Moltke's Palace.
