About Round Tower (Rundetaarn)
A 17th-century Copenhagen brick tower you climb by a wide spiral ramp rather than stairs, built for horse and carriage and still crowned by a working observatory at the top.
The Round Tower (Rundetaarn) is a 17th-century tower in central Copenhagen, built between 1637 and 1642 under King Christian IV as part of the Trinitatis Complex, which combined an astronomical observatory, a church and a university library. About 34.8 metres tall, it is built in a Dutch Baroque style of alternating red and yellow brick. Instead of a staircase, its interior is a wide spiral ramp of roughly 7.5 turns and about 210 metres, built so that a horse and carriage could reach the top.
The tower served the University of Copenhagen as an observatory; a public observatory was reinstated at the summit in the 20th century and remains in use. A gilded rebus inscription designed by Christian IV, dated 1642, appears on the facade. The observation platform, edged by a wrought-iron lattice made in 1643 by Kaspar Fincke, offers a panoramic view over the old city. The former Library Hall above the adjoining Trinitatis Church now hosts exhibitions and concerts.
Did you know? The Round Tower has no ordinary staircase. Its 'equestrian staircase' is a wide spiral ramp of about seven and a half turns and roughly 210 metres, gentle enough for a horse and carriage.
