About Tivoli Gardens

A 19th-century pleasure garden of rides, flower beds and evening lanterns beside Central Station, where a hand-braked wooden roller coaster from 1914 still clatters among the greenery after dark.

Tivoli Gardens is a pleasure garden and amusement park in central Copenhagen, opened in 1843 on land just outside the old city ramparts, beside what is now Central Station. It was founded by Georg Carstensen under a five-year charter from King Christian VIII. It is the second-oldest operating amusement park in the world, after Dyrehavsbakken (Bakken); the common claim that it is the oldest is inaccurate.

Its landmarks include the wooden roller coaster Rutschebanen, built in 1914 and run with an on-board brakeman, the Pantomime Theatre of 1874 with its mechanical peacock-tail curtain, and the 1956 Concert Hall. Later attractions include Daemonen (2004) and the Star Flyer swing (2006). The composer Hans Christian Lumbye was musical director from 1843 to 1872. In 2024 the park recorded about 4.25 million visitors, the most of any amusement park in Scandinavia.

Did you know? Rutschebanen, built in 1914, is among the world's oldest working wooden roller coasters, and it still carries a brakeman who rides in the train and controls the speed by hand on every descent.
