About National Museum of Denmark (Nationalmuseet)
Denmark's largest museum of cultural history, in the old Prince's Mansion, home to the Bronze Age Sun Chariot, the Gundestrup Cauldron and treasures spanning the entire Danish story.
The National Museum of Denmark (Nationalmuseet) is the country's largest museum of cultural history, housed in the Prince's Mansion (Prinsens Palae) at Ny Vestergade 10 in central Copenhagen. Its origins lie in a royal collection, reorganised as a state museum in the early 19th century. The collections span Danish history from the Stone Age through the Viking Age and Middle Ages to modern times, with ethnographic, classical and Near Eastern material and a large coin collection.
Signature treasures include the Trundholm Sun Chariot (Solvognen), dated to around 1400 BCE; the Gundestrup Cauldron, a decorated silver vessel of about the 1st century BCE; and oak-coffin burials such as the Egtved Girl. The Golden Horns of Gallehus are shown as replicas, since the gold originals were stolen and melted down in 1802. The museum is also an active research and repatriation institution, returning a 17th-century Tupinamba feather cloak to Brazil in 2024.
Did you know? The Trundholm Sun Chariot, dated to about 1400 BCE, is a small Nordic Bronze Age bronze model of a horse drawing a gilded sun disc on wheels, a rare glimpse of prehistoric Scandinavian belief.
