About Botanical Garden
The University of Copenhagen's ten-hectare botanical garden in the city centre, centred on an 1874 Palm House of cast iron and glass and Denmark's largest collection of living plants.
The Botanical Garden of the University of Copenhagen covers about ten hectares in the centre of the city and was relocated to its present site in 1870. It contains a complex of twenty-seven glasshouses, the centrepiece being the Palm House, a cast-iron-and-glass conservatory built in 1874 and standing about sixteen metres tall. The glasshouse complex was financed by the Carlsberg brewer J.C. Jacobsen, who drew inspiration from London's Crystal Palace, built for the 1851 Great Exhibition.
With more than 13,000 plant species, the garden holds Denmark's largest collection of living plants. Outdoor sections include Danish native plants, perennials, annuals, a rock garden and conifers, laid out along the line of the city's former defensive ramparts; the garden's lake is commonly described as a remnant of the old moat. The garden forms part of the Natural History Museum of Denmark, within the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Science, and the listed Palm House is a protected building.
Did you know? The garden's twenty-seven glasshouses were paid for by Carlsberg founder J.C. Jacobsen, who had seen London's Crystal Palace at the 1851 Great Exhibition and wanted something of its engineered glass in Copenhagen.
