About Freetown Christiania
A self-governing, largely car-free community of hand-built houses on former military land in Christianshavn, where residents decide things collectively and, in 2024, reclaimed their once-notorious Pusher Street themselves.
Freetown Christiania is a self-governing community established in 1971, when squatters and countercultural activists occupied the abandoned Baadsmandsstraede military barracks in the Christianshavn district. The journalist Jacob Ludvigsen is credited with proclaiming the free town and publicising it in his magazine. Covering about 7.7 hectares on the island of Amager, it is largely car-free and known for its improvised, self-built houses, sometimes called 'architecture without architects'. Roughly 850 to 1,000 residents govern the area collectively through a plenum and working groups rather than a conventional municipal authority.
Residents made their first land payment in 2012 and came under ordinary Danish law when the special Christiania Law was repealed in 2013. Landmarks include a Buddhist-style stupa and Den Graa Hal, a former riding hall used for concerts. One of Copenhagen's most-visited attractions, it draws around half a million visitors a year. On 6 April 2024 residents dug up Pusher Street to end its long-tolerated but never legal open cannabis trade, following gang violence.
Did you know? The community sits on about 7.7 hectares of former military barracks on Amager. Largely car-free, its improvised, owner-built houses are so distinctive that admirers call the style 'architecture without architects'.
