About Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark)
Denmark's national art museum beside the Østre Anlæg park, pairing an 1896 Renaissance-revival hall with a modern wing to show seven centuries of European and Danish painting.
Statens Museum for Kunst (SMK), the National Gallery of Denmark, is the country's main art museum, standing at Sølvgade 48 beside the Østre Anlæg park near Rosenborg Castle and the King's Garden. Its historic building, opened in 1896, was designed by Vilhelm Dahlerup and G.E.W. Møller in an Italian Renaissance-revival style; a large modern extension by C.F. Møller opened in 1998, connected to the old building by a glass-roofed hall known as the Sculpture Street.
The collection grew out of the Danish kings' art holdings and now numbers roughly 9,000 paintings and sculptures, some 240,000 works on paper, and more than 2,600 plaster casts. European art from 1300 to 1800 includes Mantegna, Cranach, Titian, Rubens and Rembrandt, alongside a deep collection of Danish and Nordic art such as the Golden Age painters Eckersberg and Hammershøi. A group of French modern works, largely from a 1928 donation, includes Matisse, Picasso, Derain and Braque.
Did you know? The museum is really two joined buildings: a solemn 1896 Renaissance-revival hall by Vilhelm Dahlerup and a 1998 glass-and-white extension by C.F. Møller, linked by a daylit hall called the Sculpture Street.
