About Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is an art museum in central Copenhagen, near City Hall. It grew out of the private art collection of Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914), son of the founder of the Carlsberg brewery, who donated it to the Danish state and city. The main building, designed by Vilhelm Dahlerup, opened in 1897; Hack Kampmann's antiquities wing was added in 1906, and Henning Larsen designed a modern extension in 1996. At its heart is a glass-domed winter garden with tall palms and a fountain.
The name derives from Greek roots meaning a repository of carved work. The collection numbers over 10,000 works, including more than 1,900 Egyptian pieces and over 950 Greek, Roman and Etruscan sculptures. It is especially strong in French and Danish 19th-century art, holds one of the world's largest Rodin collections and a complete set of Degas bronzes, and owns more than 40 works by Paul Gauguin. In 2019 it recorded about 514,600 visitors.
