About Stroeget

Copenhagen's car-free spine is a busy 1.1-kilometre chain of pedestrian streets and market squares from City Hall to Kongens Nytorv, pedestrianised in 1962 and later copied by cities worldwide.

Stroeget is a car-free pedestrian shopping zone running across the old town of Copenhagen, between City Hall Square (Raadhuspladsen) and Kongens Nytorv, about 1.1 kilometres in length. It is not a single street but the popular name for a chain of connected streets, Frederiksberggade, Nygade, Vimmelskaftet, Amagertorv and Oestergade, together with adjoining squares including Gammeltorv, Nytorv and Amagertorv, where the Stork Fountain (Storkespringvandet) stands.

The streets were closed to cars and pedestrianised on 17 November 1962, at first as an experiment, and made permanent in 1964. The project was an early and influential example of car-free urban design, later studied and copied in other cities. Pedestrian counts run at roughly 80,000 people on a summer day and about 48,000 in winter, rising to around 120,000 on the last Sunday before Christmas. It is often called Europe's longest pedestrian street, though this was accurate only around 1962.

Did you know? Stroeget was closed to cars on 17 November 1962, at first only as a trial. The experiment succeeded and became permanent in 1964, an early and influential model of car-free city design.
