About Roskilde Cathedral
The brick-Gothic UNESCO cathedral at Roskilde, burial church of most Danish monarchs since the fifteenth century, with the Viking Ship Museum on the fjord a short walk away.
Roskilde Cathedral stands about thirty-five kilometres west of Copenhagen, in the town of Roskilde. A brick-Gothic building begun around 1170 under Bishop Absalon, it is one of the earliest brick churches in Scandinavia, made possible by brick-firing technology that had reached Denmark only around 1160. Its choir was inaugurated in 1225, the cathedral was largely completed by about 1280, and the twin towers were finished around 1405.
Since the fifteenth century it has been the main burial church of Danish monarchs, with around thirty-nine to forty kings and queens interred in the cathedral and its chapels. Royal chapels added over the centuries, from the Chapel of the Magi of the 1460s to Frederik IX's burial site of 1985, span many architectural periods. The cathedral was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Nearby on the Roskilde Fjord, the Viking Ship Museum displays five original eleventh-century Skuldelev ships.
