About Kronborg Castle
The Renaissance fortress at Elsinore guarding the narrow Oresund, world-famous as the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet and a UNESCO World Heritage Site about forty-five kilometres north of Copenhagen.
Kronborg stands at Helsingor (Elsinore), on the northeastern tip of Zealand at the narrowest point of the Oresund strait, about four kilometres from the Swedish coast and roughly forty-five kilometres north of Copenhagen. King Frederick II had the older fortress of Krogen rebuilt into this Renaissance castle between 1574 and 1585, employing Flemish architects. Its strategic purpose was to control and collect the Sound Dues, the toll levied on ships passing through the strait, which was a major source of Danish royal income.
A fire in 1629 destroyed much of the castle; Christian IV had the exterior rebuilt by 1639, though the interior never fully regained its former splendour. Kronborg was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 as one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe. It is world-famous as the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet, though the playwright almost certainly never visited. In the casemates stands a statue of the legendary sleeping hero Holger Danske.
Did you know? Kronborg's wealth came from tolls: it controlled the Sound Dues charged on ships passing through the four-kilometre-wide strait, a levy that filled the Danish royal treasury for centuries.
