About Frederiksborg Castle

The red-brick Renaissance castle on three islets at Hillerod, rebuilt after an 1859 fire and now the Museum of National History, about forty kilometres north of Copenhagen.

Frederiksborg Castle stands on three islets in the Slotssoen, the castle lake, at Hillerod, about forty kilometres north of Copenhagen. Built for King Christian IV in the early seventeenth century, with the main structure completed around 1610 and the whole complex by about 1620, it is the largest Renaissance residence in Scandinavia, in a red-brick Dutch-influenced style with stepped gables, spires and towers. The chief architect, Hans van Steenwinckel the Elder, died in 1601, and his sons completed the work.

In December 1859 a fire destroyed most of the interior, though the chapel and some rooms survived and over 300 paintings were saved. Reconstruction was funded by a national public subscription together with a large gift from the Carlsberg brewer J.C. Jacobsen, whose support led to the castle reopening as the Museum of National History, established in 1878. The museum houses Denmark's largest collection of portraits, and the surviving chapel, once used for royal coronations, contains the Compenius organ of 1610.

Did you know? A fire in December 1859 gutted most of the interior. The rebuilding was paid for by a national public subscription and a large gift from Carlsberg brewer J.C. Jacobsen, who then endowed the museum.
