About Volpaia

Volpaia, a tiny fortified hilltop village above Radda, where a wine estate makes its wine inside the old houses, towers and churches of the medieval village.

Volpaia is first recorded in 1172 as a castle. It was part of the Lega del Chianti, and two of its six towers survive. Its finest building is the Commenda di Sant'Eufrosino, a small church built between 1443 and 1460. The Castello di Volpaia estate ages its wine in cellars beneath the old buildings, linked by pipes under the streets.

The village streets are free to walk; people live here, so keep quiet. The estate offers cellar visits and tastings, best booked ahead. Park in the car park below the village. Do not drive after tasting.

Did you know? The first document naming Volpaia, written in 1172, speaks of the court and castle of Vulpaio, offered as security for a loan.
