About Badia a Passignano
Badia a Passignano, a medieval abbey of the Vallombrosan monks in a ring of cypresses above the vineyards, with a Last Supper painted by Domenico Ghirlandaio in 1476.
A monastery stood here by the late ninth century, and in the eleventh century it passed to the Vallombrosan order; its founder, Saint John Gualbert, died here in 1073. The church dates from 1266-87. In 1476 Domenico Ghirlandaio and his brother painted the Last Supper in the refectory. Monks have lived here again since 1986.
The abbey is a working monastery: the interior and the Last Supper can be seen only on a booked guided visit. The village and the outside are free. Wine tastings in the old cellars need a reservation.
