About Panzano in Chianti
Panzano in Chianti, a hilltop village on the Chiantigiana with the remains of a medieval castle, looking over the Conca d'Oro, a golden bowl of vineyards, and known for its butcher shop.
Panzano grew around a castle of the Firidolfi family, sacked in 1260 and again in 1397. Its bell tower was once a corner tower of the castle. Below the village lies the Conca d'Oro, the golden bowl, once named for its wheat and now covered with vineyards. Outside the village stands the old parish church of San Leolino.
The village is free to walk at any time. The famous butcher shop and the restaurants keep their own hours and are busy at lunch. Wine cellars are often visited by appointment. The Vino al Vino wine fair is held in September.
Did you know? The Conca d'Oro below Panzano, the golden bowl, is said to be named after the wheat that once grew there; since the 1970s it has been covered with vines.
