About Montefioralle

Montefioralle, a tiny medieval village of stone houses on a hilltop above Greve in Chianti, built in an oval ring around its old castle and listed among the most beautiful villages of Italy.

The castle of Monteficalle, as it was once called, is first recorded in 1085. Its houses form an oval ring around the old keep, along one main street, inside walls with gates. A coat of arms with a wasp marks a house tradition links to the Vespucci family, although the navigator Amerigo Vespucci was born in Florence.

The village is free to walk at any time; it is car-free, with steep cobbled lanes. Park below the walls or walk up from Greve in about 25 minutes. The church is often closed outside Mass. People live here, so keep your voice low.

Did you know? The hilltop village of Montefioralle was called Monteficalle until the eighteenth century, and a document written at its castle in 1085 is its oldest record.
