About Chianti Classico Wine
Chianti Classico, the red wine of the hills between Florence and Siena, made mainly from Sangiovese and marked with the black rooster, in a zone first defined in 1716.
The name Chianti was used for a wine as early as 1398, and in 1716 Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici fixed the borders of the Chianti zone. In the 1870s Baron Bettino Ricasoli set out a recipe based on Sangiovese. Today Chianti Classico must contain at least 80 percent Sangiovese and comes in three levels: Annata, Riserva and Gran Selezione.
Most estates offer visits and tastings, usually by booking, and many close one day a week. If you taste wine, use a driver who does not drink, a taxi or a tour: the limit in Italy is 0.5 grams per litre.
Did you know? In 1716 Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici fixed the borders of the Chianti wine zone by decree, to protect its wine against fraud and imitation.
