About Gaiole in Chianti
Gaiole in Chianti, a small market town in a green valley of southern Chianti, one of the three towns of the old Lega del Chianti and the home of L'Eroica, a ride on vintage bicycles.
Gaiole grew up in the valley as a market where the people of the castles around came to trade. It was one of the three parts of the Lega del Chianti, with Radda and Castellina. Since 1997 it has hosted L'Eroica, a non-competitive ride on vintage racing bicycles over the white gravel roads of the area, held each October.
The town is free to walk. Shops, cafés and tasting rooms keep their own hours, and some close on Mondays. The signed Eroica route can be ridden at any time. The castles of Brolio and Meleto and the abbey of Coltibuono are close by.
