About Castello di Meleto
Castello di Meleto near Gaiole, a medieval castle with round towers turned into a villa in the eighteenth century, with a tiny theatre of 1742 and a working wine estate.
Meleto is first recorded in the eleventh century and later belonged to a branch of the Firidolfi family, ancestors of the Ricasoli. Near the border with Siena, it was taken in 1478 and strengthened by Florence after 1480 with two round towers. In the eighteenth century it became a villa, with a small theatre that keeps its original painted scenery.
The interiors can be seen only on a guided tour with a tasting, which must be booked, often at least a day ahead. The castle is a working wine estate, with rooms for guests. Arrange a driver if you plan to taste.
Did you know? The little theatre inside the Castello di Meleto, near Gaiole, dates from 1742 and still has its seven original painted stage sets.
