About Castellina in Chianti
Castellina in Chianti, a hilltop town on the Chiantigiana with a fortress tower, a covered vaulted street along its walls, and a great Etruscan burial mound just outside.
Castellina was one of the three strongholds of the Lega del Chianti, on the border between Florence and Siena. The Rocca, with its fourteenth-century tower, holds an archaeological museum of Chianti. The Via delle Volte is a long vaulted passage along the old walls. Outside town, the Montecalvario mound holds four Etruscan chamber tombs.
The old town and the Via delle Volte are free. The museum in the Rocca needs a ticket, which includes the tower view. Montecalvario is a free outdoor site, about ten minutes on foot; visit it in daylight.
Did you know? The Tumulus of Montecalvario outside Castellina is an Etruscan burial mound more than fifty metres across, holding four chamber tombs facing the four points of the compass.
