About San Casciano in Val di Pesa
San Casciano in Val di Pesa, a hill town at the northern edge of Chianti, with medieval walls, a museum of sacred art, and the nearby farm where Machiavelli wrote The Prince.
In Roman times this was a posting station ten miles from Florence. The town walls were built by Florence in 1354-56 and long stretches survive. Its museum shows Etruscan finds and paintings by Ambrogio Lorenzetti and Coppo di Marcovaldo. Nearby, at Sant'Andrea in Percussina, Niccolò Machiavelli lived in exile and wrote The Prince.
The town is free to walk. The museum has short hours and is open on Monday mornings in winter. Wine estates around the town are visited by appointment. In 1944 the town was almost destroyed, so much of the centre was rebuilt.
