About Radda in Chianti

Radda in Chianti, the old capital of the Lega del Chianti, a hill town of stone lanes with a fifteenth-century Palazzo del Podestà covered in about fifty coats of arms.

For about four centuries the captain of the Lega del Chianti, the league of Radda, Gaiole and Castellina, sat in the Palazzo del Podestà. Its front carries the coats of arms of the officials who governed here. In 1924 the Chianti Classico wine growers founded their consortium in Radda and chose the black rooster as its symbol.

The town is free to walk. The Palazzo is the working town hall, so you see it from outside. The Casa del Chianti Classico, a wine exhibition in an old convent, has its own days and may be closed on Mondays.
