About Badia a Coltibuono

Badia a Coltibuono, an abbey of the eleventh century in the woods above Gaiole, with a Romanesque church and bell tower, a cloister and a garden, now a wine and olive oil estate.

The abbey of San Lorenzo was founded in the middle of the eleventh century and soon passed to the Vallombrosan monks, who planted the fir woods around it. It was closed in 1810 under Napoleon and sold; its church became a parish church. Today the estate makes organic wine and olive oil.

Visits and tastings are by reservation, and the estate is usually closed on Mondays. The church follows the parish timetable. The road up is narrow and wooded, and there is a restaurant on the estate.

Did you know? Over the centuries, the Vallombrosan monks of Badia a Coltibuono planted the fir woods that still surround the abbey above Gaiole in Chianti.
