About Ada Ciganlija
Belgrade's beloved river playground, a former Sava island turned peninsula with a long swimming lake and gravel beaches, nicknamed 'the Belgrade Sea' and packed on summer weekends.
Ada Ciganlija is Belgrade's favourite summer playground, a former island in the Sava that was turned into a peninsula and given a long, clean swimming lake. Lake Sava, created by damming an arm of the river in 1967, is some four kilometres long, ringed by about seven kilometres of gravel beach whose water warms to around 24 degrees in summer.
Belgraders fondly call it 'More Beograda', the Belgrade Sea, and on a hot weekend it can draw hundreds of thousands of people. Besides swimming, there is rowing, cycling and sailing, a bungee-jumping platform, forests and cafes and floating bars. Because the lake also helps supply the city's drinking water, motorboats are banned, keeping it calm and clean.
