About Republic Square
The central square of Belgrade and its great meeting point 'at the horse', ringed by the National Theatre and the National Museum around the bronze equestrian statue of Prince Mihailo.
Republic Square (Trg Republike) is the main central square of Belgrade and its traditional meeting point; locals say they will meet 'at the horse', meaning the equestrian statue of Prince Mihailo at its centre. Around the square stand the National Theatre, opened in 1869 on the site of a demolished Ottoman gate, and the National Museum of Serbia.
The bronze statue of Prince Mihailo, by the Florentine sculptor Enrico Pazzi, was unveiled in December 1882 and was the first equestrian statue of a ruler in Serbia; the prince's outstretched hand is popularly said to point toward Constantinople. Unveiled amid cannon salvos and ringing bells to mark the new Kingdom of Serbia, the square lies over the Roman necropolis of Singidunum and remains the lively heart of the city.
