About Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan

The great ridge-top fortress above the meeting of the Sava and the Danube, the oldest part of Belgrade, wrapped in a much-loved park and crowned by the bronze Victor looking out over the rivers.

Belgrade Fortress stands on a ridge about 125 metres above the confluence of the Sava and the Danube, and it is the oldest part of the city; for centuries the whole of Belgrade lived inside its walls, so its story is the story of the city. The Roman legion stationed here built the first stone fort, and over the ages Byzantines, Serbs, Ottomans and Austrians rebuilt it again and again.

Spread below the ramparts is Kalemegdan, a leafy park whose Turkish name means 'fortress field', laid out on the old parade ground. On the ridge stands the city's emblem, the Victor (Pobednik), a bronze nude by Ivan Meštrović holding a falcon and a sword, gazing out over the rivers. The fortress also holds the Military Museum, the little Ružica Church and medieval gates and towers.

Did you know? Belgrade Fortress stands about 125 metres above the meeting of the Sava and the Danube; it is the oldest part of the city, first fortified in stone by a Roman legion and rebuilt again and again by Byzantines, Serbs, Ottomans and Austrians.
