About Skadarlija

Belgrade's old bohemian quarter, a short cobbled street of flower-hung taverns where poets and actors once gathered, still alive at night with grilled food, live music and a Montmartre-like air.

Skadarlija is Belgrade's historic bohemian quarter, centred on the short, cobbled Skadarska Street that climbs from near Republic Square. From the early twentieth century it became the haunt of the city's poets, painters and actors, who gathered in its kafanas, the traditional taverns, giving it a reputation as the Montmartre of Belgrade. Its oldest tavern, Tri šešira, dates from 1864.

The poet Đura Jakšić lived here, and his statue sits before his house; a fountain at the street's end is a copy of the Sebilj in Sarajevo, a gift from that city. Protected since 1967 and given its folkloric look in a 1968 restoration, Skadarlija comes alive in the evening, when the kafanas fill with grilled food, wine and live tamburica music under the lanterns.
