About St Michael's Cathedral
The old Serbian Orthodox cathedral near the fortress, a Neoclassical church of the 1830s with a Baroque bell tower, holding the tombs of Serbian princes and the reformer Vuk Karadžić.
St Michael's Cathedral, the Saborna crkva, is the cathedral of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Belgrade, a graceful Neoclassical church with a tall Baroque bell tower, standing in the old town near the Patriarchate. One of the few buildings to survive from the first half of the nineteenth century, it was built between 1837 and 1840, under Prince Miloš Obrenović, as Serbia emerged from Ottoman rule, and consecrated in 1845.
Inside are a richly gilded iconostasis and wall paintings by Dimitrije Avramović, and the tombs of the princes Miloš and Mihailo Obrenović, the great language reformer Vuk Karadžić and the Enlightenment writer Dositej Obradović. Across the street stands the famous tavern known simply as the Question Mark, '?', the oldest working kafana in Belgrade.
