About Bajrakli Mosque
The last mosque left in Belgrade, a modest Ottoman building of the sixteenth century, the sole survivor of hundreds that once stood here and still the heart of the city's Muslim community.
The Bajrakli Mosque, tucked among apartment blocks in the old Dorćol quarter, is the only mosque left in Belgrade, the sole survivor of the hundreds that stood here under Ottoman rule. It dates from around 1575, in the Ottoman centuries, and its name means 'with a flag': a timekeeper here once raised a flag on the minaret to signal the start of prayer to the city's other mosques.
A modest cubic stone building under an octagonal dome, with a slender minaret, it was briefly turned into a Catholic church during an Austrian occupation before becoming a mosque again. Damaged by fire during riots in 2004, it was repaired, and it remains an active place of worship and the main centre of Islamic life in Belgrade.
