About St Mark's Church

A grand Serbo-Byzantine church in leafy Tašmajdan Park, modelled on the medieval monastery of Gračanica, holding the marble tomb of the great medieval Emperor Dušan.

St Mark's Church (Crkva Svetog Marka), in the green expanse of Tašmajdan Park, is one of Belgrade's largest churches, built in the Serbo-Byzantine style and modelled on the celebrated medieval monastery of Gračanica. Designed by the brothers Petar and Branko Krstić, it was built between 1931 and 1940 and consecrated in 1948; it is the second-largest church in Serbia after the Church of Saint Sava.

Inside, on the south side, stands the marble tomb of Emperor Dušan, the mightiest medieval Serbian ruler, whose relics were brought here in 1968. The interior is still being adorned with glittering mosaics. Beside the church stands a small Russian church, built in the 1920s by Russian emigres, which holds the tomb of the White Russian general Wrangel.
