Łazienki, the Royal Baths Park, is the largest park in Warsaw, seventy-six hectares of lawns, lakes and woodland in the centre of the city. It was shaped by the last king of Poland, Stanisław August Poniatowski, who acquired the estate in the 1760s and turned a Baroque bathing pavilion into the classical Palace on the Isle, set on an island between two stretches of water and reached by colonnaded bridges. Here the king held his celebrated 'Thursday Dinners' for the thinkers and artists of the Polish Enlightenment.
The park holds an Art-Nouveau monument to Frédéric Chopin, a seated composer beneath a sweeping willow; the Germans blew up the original in 1940, and it was recast in 1958. Free piano recitals have been played at its foot on summer Sundays since 1959. Scattered through the grounds are an open-air amphitheatre with a stage on the water, an eighteenth-century court theatre in the Old Orangery, smaller palaces, and peacocks that wander the paths.
