About St. John's Archcathedral
The brick-Gothic mother church of Warsaw, where kings were crowned and buried, destroyed almost completely in 1944 and rebuilt in a plain medieval form, with a national pantheon in its crypts.
St. John's Archcathedral, on narrow Świętojańska Street in the Old Town, is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Warsaw and one of the oldest churches in the city. A brick-Gothic church rose here around 1390 on the initiative of Duke Janusz I, and over the centuries it served as a place of coronation and burial. Queen Cecylia Renata was crowned here in 1637 and Stanisław August Poniatowski, the last king, in 1764; after swearing to the Constitution of 3 May 1791 at the castle, the king came here to repeat his oath.
During the 1944 Uprising the cathedral became a battlefield, and about ninety per cent of its walls were destroyed; one wall survived. It was rebuilt between 1948 and 1956 in a restored fourteenth-century Gothic form, rather than the ornate style it had worn before the war. Its crypts hold Dukes of Masovia, King Stanisław August, the writer Henryk Sienkiewicz, and several presidents and primates of Poland.
