About Barbican
A round, red-brick fortified gate on the old city walls between the Old Town and New Town, built in the mid-sixteenth century, long ruined, and rebuilt after the war as one of Warsaw's best-loved landmarks.
The Barbican, the Barbakan, is a semicircular brick outwork on the old defensive walls of Warsaw, standing where the Old Town meets the New Town. It was built in the mid-sixteenth century by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista to guard the Nowomiejska gate, part of a modernising of the medieval walls. Almost as soon as it was finished, advances in artillery made such bastions obsolete, and it saw serious action only once, in 1656, when Polish forces retook the city from the Swedes.
Over the following centuries it was partly dismantled and swallowed up by tenement houses. Largely destroyed in 1939 and 1944, it was rebuilt between 1952 and 1954 from seventeenth-century engravings, using bricks salvaged from demolished buildings in other Polish towns. Today it is the second-largest barbican in Poland after Kraków's, a favourite spot for street musicians and portrait artists, and a fine place from which to look at the restored walls.
Did you know? The Barbican was built in the mid-sixteenth century by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista, but new artillery soon made it obsolete; it saw real combat only once, retaken from the Swedes in 1656.
