About Castle Square and Sigismund's Column

The grand triangular square before the Royal Castle, where the king's road begins, dominated by the slender column of King Sigismund III, the first secular monument of its kind and the oldest in Warsaw.

Castle Square, Plac Zamkowy, is the broad triangular space in front of the Royal Castle and the point where the Royal Route begins its journey south through the city. Rising from it is Sigismund's Column, erected in 1643 and 1644 by King Władysław IV Vasa in honour of his father, Sigismund III, who had moved the capital from Kraków to Warsaw. Designed by Constantino Tencalla with the sculptor Clemente Molli, it is often called the first secular monument in the form of a column in modern times.

The whole monument is about twenty-two metres high, the bronze king standing almost three metres, armoured and crowned, a cross in one hand and a sabre in the other. On 1 September 1944 the Germans toppled the column and damaged the statue; it was repaired and set on a new granite shaft in 1949. The battered older shafts still lie beside the castle wall, and the square itself has long been a place of both protest and celebration.

Did you know? Sigismund's Column was raised in 1643 to 1644 by King Władysław IV in honour of his father Sigismund III; it was not built by Sigismund himself.
