About Wilanów Palace
The baroque summer palace of King Jan III Sobieski, the victor of Vienna, often called the Polish Versailles; one of the few great Warsaw buildings to survive the war, set in formal gardens.
Wilanów Palace, at the southern end of the Royal Route, was built between 1677 and 1696 for King Jan III Sobieski, the ruler who had broken the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683. Begun as a Polish manor and enlarged into a baroque residence blending Polish, Italian and French taste, its façades and interiors glorify the king as a Roman hero. Sobieski died here in 1696. Later owners added neoclassical rooms and gardens, and in 1805 Stanisław Kostka Potocki opened one of Poland's first public museums in the palace.
Unlike most of Warsaw, Wilanów came through the world wars and the 1944 Uprising damaged but standing, so much of its baroque fabric is original. It is nicknamed the 'Polish Versailles', though it is far smaller, and is surrounded by terraced baroque gardens, French parterres and an English landscape park. In the former riding school stands the Poster Museum, the first museum of its kind in the world.
