About Warsaw Uprising Museum

The museum of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, set in a former tram power station, recalling the sixty-three-day fight and the destruction of the city through its exhibits, monument wall and the names of the fallen.

The Warsaw Uprising Museum, in the former Tramway Power Station in the Wola district, is devoted to the rising of 1944, when the Polish Home Army fought the German occupation for sixty-three days, from 1 August to 2 October. It opened in 2004, on the eve of the sixtieth anniversary. The exhibition fills three levels with photographs, objects and reconstructions, arranged as a chronological route; at its centre a tall steel Monument carries the dates of the rising and sounds a heartbeat, the 'beating heart of fighting Warsaw'.

Among its displays are a full-scale replica of a B-24 Liberator, recalling the Allied airdrops to the city; a brick sewer like those the insurgents used to move between districts; and the short film 'City of Ruins', which reconstructs the destroyed Warsaw of early 1945. Outside, a long Memorial Wall carries more than eleven thousand names of Home Army soldiers who died. The scale of loss was immense: about sixteen thousand insurgents and, by most estimates, one hundred and fifty to two hundred thousand civilians were killed.
