About Palace of Culture and Science
The towering Stalinist skyscraper at the centre of Warsaw, a Soviet 'gift' of 1955 long the tallest building in Poland, still a divisive landmark, with a famous viewing terrace on the thirtieth floor.
The Palace of Culture and Science, the Pałac Kultury i Nauki, rises 237 metres over central Warsaw, a vast Stalinist tower finished in 1955 as a 'gift' from the Soviet Union. Designed by the Soviet architect Lev Rudnev in the manner of Moscow's 'Seven Sisters', it was given local touches drawn from Polish Renaissance buildings. It was long the tallest building in Poland, now second after the Varso Tower, and when new it was among the tallest in the world.
The tower holds theatres, cinemas, museums, a large congress hall, offices and a swimming pool, and its thirtieth-floor terrace, at 114 metres, offers the best panorama of the city. Warsaw has never quite made peace with it: a symbol of Soviet domination to many, mocked with countless nicknames, yet also an unmistakable emblem of the city, lit in changing colours at night and now ringed by a modern glass skyline.
Did you know? Finished in 1955 as a 'gift' from the Soviet Union, the 237-metre tower was designed by Lev Rudnev in the style of Moscow's 'Seven Sisters', with details borrowed from Polish Renaissance buildings.
