The Vistula Boulevards, the Bulwary Wiślane, are the revived riverfront promenade on the left bank of the Vistula, rebuilt in stages from 2015 onward into a broad, lively waterfront of pale walkways, steps down to the water, cycle paths, barge cafés and gardens. For most of the city's history a busy road cut Warsaw off from its river; the new boulevards finally turned the waterside back into a place to walk, cycle and sit.
On the promenade at Powiśle stands the riverside Mermaid, the Syrenka, cast in 1939 by Ludwika Nitschowa, a larger guardian figure than the one in the Old Town square, raising her sword above the water. Across the river, the right bank is left wild, a rare near-natural shore of trees, reeds and sandbars within a great European capital, protected as part of the Middle Vistula valley. In summer, barges, beaches and a nearby multimedia fountain draw the whole city down to the water.
