About Palace of the Grand Dukes

A full reconstruction, built between 2002 and 2018, of the grand-ducal residence demolished around 1801; now a national museum, with authentic cellars shown among rebuilt state rooms.

The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania stands in the Lower Castle beside Cathedral Square, on the site of the historic residence of the grand dukes. A stone Gothic palace was built here in the 15th century, remodelled in Renaissance style in the 1520s and 1530s, and given early-Baroque features soon after. It served for roughly four centuries as a political and cultural centre of the Grand Duchy and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, until fire during the 1655 Russian occupation and, later, near-total demolition around 1801.

The building seen today is a modern reconstruction on the original site, begun in 2002 and fully opened in 2018. It operates as the National Museum - Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, combining newly built Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque interiors with authentic basement and foundation remains. Its exterior was styled to harmonise with the neighbouring cathedral. The palace lies within the UNESCO-listed Old Town.

Did you know? The palace you see is entirely a 21st-century reconstruction, built 2002-2018, of a residence demolished around 1801; only its cellars and foundations are genuinely old, shown in the basement.
