About Pilies Street
The Old Town's main pedestrian axis, running about 500 metres from Cathedral Square to Town Hall Square, lined with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque facades and amber traders.
Pilies gatve, or Castle Street, is one of the oldest and most important streets of Vilnius Old Town. Its name reflects its historic role linking the castle complex to the town below. Running about 500 metres from Cathedral Square to Town Hall Square, it forms, together with Didzioji Street, the Old Town's main axis. Over the centuries it has carried other names, including the Polish Zamkowa and, under Soviet rule, M. Gorkio Street.
The street is largely pedestrian and displays a mix of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque facades. The main buildings of Vilnius University occupy the block between Pilies and Universiteto streets, and the House of the Signatories stands here, where the Act of Independence of Lithuania was signed on 16 February 1918. Folk-art traders sell amber jewellery and linen goods along its length, and during the annual Kaziukas Fair artisans from across Lithuania fill the street. It lies within the Vilnius Old Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Did you know? On 16 February 1918, in the House of the Signatories on Pilies Street, the Act of Independence of Lithuania was signed, making this everyday shopping street a birthplace of the modern state.
