About Town Hall Square

A broad square at the foot of Didzioji Street, dominated by Laurynas Gucevicius's neoclassical Town Hall, once the city's regulated marketplace and now its ceremonial heart.

Town Hall Square (Rotuses aikste) opens at the end of Pilies and Didzioji streets, in the heart of the Old Town. A town hall on the site is first mentioned in 1432. The original building was Gothic; the present neoclassical Town Hall was rebuilt in 1785-1799 to a design by architect Laurynas Gucevicius. Gothic cellars survive beneath the building and can be visited. Over its history the Town Hall has also housed a theatre and a museum.

Historically the square was the city's main marketplace, with strictly regulated trade in goods such as salt, iron and meat, and a stage for public performances by bears, acrobats and comedians as well as religious mystery plays. Today the Town Hall is used for representative and ceremonial purposes, including receptions for visiting heads of state; documented guests include Queen Elizabeth II and George W. Bush. The square hosts the annual Kaziukas Fair and the decorating of the city's Christmas tree, and lies within the Vilnius Old Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Did you know? The present neoclassical Town Hall was rebuilt in 1785-1799 to a design by Laurynas Gucevicius, replacing an earlier Gothic building; its Gothic cellars survive beneath and can still be visited.
