About St Casimir's Church
The oldest Baroque church in Vilnius, crowned by a distinctive cupola; once a Soviet Museum of Atheism, it was returned to worshippers in 1988 and reconsecrated in 1991.
St Casimir's Church (Sv. Kazimiero baznycia) is the oldest Baroque church in Vilnius. It was built by the Jesuits, with construction beginning on 12 May 1604; the shell was finished by 1616 and the interior by 1618. Its design drew on the Jesuits' mother church, Il Gesu in Rome. Dedicated to St Casimir, the patron saint of Lithuania, it stands on Didzioji Street near Town Hall Square. In the mid-eighteenth century Tomasz Zebrowski rebuilt the church and added a stepped lantern cupola topped by a large crown, described as unique in the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
During the Soviet era the church was converted into a Museum of Atheism; Wikipedia dates the conversion to 1963, while some guidebooks cite the later 1960s. It was returned to believers in 1988 and reconsecrated in 1991, and is once again a functioning Jesuit Roman Catholic church under the Archdiocese of Vilnius. Known for its acoustics, it hosts organ and classical music concerts. The church suffered several fires and rebuildings over its history, and lies within the Vilnius Old Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.
