About Vilnius University
Founded in 1579, the oldest university in Lithuania and the Baltic states, a labyrinth of about thirteen courtyards, white arcades and the Baroque Church of St Johns.
Vilnius University was founded in 1579, when King Stephen Bathory raised the existing Jesuit college to university status; a papal bull confirmed it on 30 October 1579. The Jesuits ran the institution until their order was suppressed in 1773. After the failed 1831 uprising, Tsar Nicholas I closed the university on 1 May 1832, and it did not function as a university again until 1919. It is the oldest university in Lithuania and the Baltic states, and among the oldest in Central and Eastern Europe.
The historic ensemble sits between Pilies and Universiteto streets and is arranged around roughly thirteen interconnected courtyards, among them the Grand Courtyard, the Library Courtyard and the Sarbievijus Courtyard. The Church of St Johns stands in the Grand Courtyard; its bell tower, about 69 metres tall, is the tallest building in the Old Town. The University Library, founded in 1570, holds several million items. The complex lies within the Vilnius Old Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Did you know? The bell tower of the Church of St Johns rises about sixty-nine metres, making it the tallest building in Vilnius Old Town; it was built between 1600 and 1610 and later heightened.
