About Bernardine Gardens
A riverside park below Gediminas Hill, where Bernardine monks once kept orchards and ponds; restored in 2013 with meadows, a rosary, a rock garden and a singing fountain.
The Bernardine Garden is a public park in Vilnius Old Town, set on a bend of the Vilnia river below Gediminas Hill and the hill of the Three Crosses. Its origins reach back to the 15th century, when Bernardine friars cultivated gardens, ponds and orchards on the marshy riverside beside their monastery. The surrounding land later formed the Sereikiškės suburb, and in the 19th century the site developed as a botanical and city garden.
Long known as the Youth Garden and Sereikiškės Park, it regained the name Bernardine Garden after a 2013 reconstruction, which recreated a 19th-century-style layout with meadows, a central square, a rosary, and a rock garden with a pond, along with a musical fountain. Beside the park stands the Late Gothic Bernardine Church, consecrated in 1516 and once built into the town's defensive wall. Franciscan brethren returned to it in 1994. The gardens lie within the UNESCO-listed Old Town.
Did you know? The garden's musical fountain shoots jets in time to music from the central rosary; the whole park was rebuilt in 2013 to recall a 19th-century garden layout.
