About Vilnius Cathedral
Lithuania's main Roman Catholic cathedral, rebuilt in neoclassical form by Laurynas Gucevičius, with a Baroque chapel for St Casimir and royal crypts beneath the floor, on Cathedral Square.
Vilnius Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Basilica of St Stanislaus and St Ladislaus, is the principal Roman Catholic church of Lithuania. A place of worship has stood on the site since pagan times, and tradition holds that a cathedral was first built here after King Mindaugas converted in 1251. The building was destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly, with major fires and collapses recorded across the centuries. Its present neoclassical form was designed by Laurynas Gucevičius, built from 1779 with the interior completed by 1801.
The early-Baroque Chapel of St Casimir, built between 1623 and 1636, holds the relics of St Casimir, the patron saint of Lithuania, beneath frescoes and stucco of the 1690s. The crypts below contain tombs of rulers and nobles. During the Soviet period the cathedral served as a picture gallery; Mass resumed in 1988 and cathedral status was restored in 1989. It stands within the UNESCO-listed Old Town.
Did you know? The three saints on the roofline, Casimir, Stanislaus and Helena, were torn down by Soviet authorities in 1950 and only put back in 1997, after independence returned to the cathedral roof.
