About Gediminas' Tower

The last red-brick tower of the Upper Castle on Gediminas Hill, largely rebuilt in the 1930s, now a museum with a rooftop viewpoint over the Old Town and its rivers.

Gediminas' Tower is the only surviving structure of the Upper Castle that once crowned Gediminas Hill, the historic seat of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The hill was fortified in timber from the 13th century, and Grand Duke Gediminas is credited with its first masonry defences. The octagonal red-brick tower seen today dates mainly from the early 15th century, when the Upper Castle was rebuilt in brick under Grand Duke Vytautas; it was substantially reconstructed in 1930-1933 by the architect Jan Borowski.

Three storeys tall, it houses a branch of the National Museum of Lithuania, with models of the medieval castles, armaments and archaeological finds, and a rooftop platform over the Old Town. The Lithuanian tricolour was first raised here in 1919 and again in 1988 during the independence movement. Reached on foot or by funicular, the tower is widely treated as a symbol of Lithuanian statehood and lies within the UNESCO-listed Old Town.

Did you know? The founding legend has Gediminas dreaming of an iron wolf that howled like a hundred wolves; a pagan priest read the dream as an omen to build Vilnius here.
